The result of the election of 1800 was that Vice President Thomas Jefferson of the Democratic-Republican Party defeated incumbent President John Adams of the Federalist Party. This was a particularly significant election, as the fact that Jefferson won represented a realigning of power which ushered in a generation of Democratic-Republican rule. This is why this election is often called the "Revolution of 1800."

In 1800, however, Jefferson won the presidential election with 73 votes but the Republican vice presidential candidate Aaron Burr also received 73 votes, making the vote for the presidency a tie. In case of a tie, the Constitution directed that theelection be decided by the House of Representatives
