we often learn about the Americas as the "New World," discovered by Columbus and conquered by the Spanish and other European powers. In what ways does telling the story this way affect how we think of the Maya, Aztec, and Inca? How else could this story be told?

If we refer to the America's as the "New World", we incinuate that the Native Americans weren't really important. WHen the tech. savvy Europeans came over, they regarded themselves as superior. Calling the already existing civilization inferior and killing them off was messed up. Instead, the story could have been told as the Europeans came over to an already established civilization, ruined it, and took the place over. It wasn't "New", it was pretty old. It just wasn't as developed.
