On April 25,1862 the Union army fought the Confederates for control of New Orleans ... April 25th was a significant day because of the capture of New Orleans, but for many soldiers it was an ordinary day filled with the usual banalities of war.

Union fought confederates for New Orleans
Explanation:
Important because it demonstrated the power of the Union navy. New Orleans also had a large port which the confederates were in charge of, but when union took it over, it made it easier to take control of the Mississippi river, which was alos in the three part plan to defeat the confederates. I believe this was called the Anaconda Plan.
