The Twelfth Amendment changed the voting procedure of the Electoral College in that it required separate voting for the president and vice president.

The members of the US Congress learned some lessons during the electoral process of 1796 and 1800, so they decided to pass a new bill. Originally, the members of the electoral college cast two votes, making no distinction if the vote was for President or Vicepresident. So with the 12th Amendment to the United States Constitution, it was required separate voting for the president and vice president. The Amendment was ratified by the states on June 15, 1804.
