What happened when the Great Sioux Nation sued the United States over the Black Hills of South Dakota was that the Supreme Court ruled that the United States should pay the Sioux for the land.

We are referring to the Supreme Court case the United States v. Sioux Nation of Indians, in June 1980.

The United States granted the Sioux Indians their reservation and the Black Hills in South Dakota under the Fort Laramie treaty of 1868. But in 1887, Congress passed an act that reclaimed the territory. The Sioux asked for compensation. At the end of the case, the Sioux were compensated under the Just Compensation Clause.
