Why was Tennessee considered part of the West?

    West Tennessee is one of the three major regions (called Grand Divisions) of the state of Tennessee. The region includes 21 counties west of the Tennessee River. It consists primarily of flat lands that have rich soil and vast floodplain areas for the Mississippi River.
