Explain how Jospeh Stalin used his position in the communist party and other means to gain control over the USSR?

Stalin was in charge of selecting positions for the presidents cabinet after Lenin's death and thus seized power placing himself in control of the Soviet Union and removed all his enemies by killing or jailing them.
