The British Empire began to take shape in the early seventeenth century, establishing by England the 13 colonies of North America, which were the origin of the United States as well as the maritime provinces of Canada. The colonization of small islands in the Caribbean Sea such as Jamaica and Barbados also occurred.

For England, the most important and lucrative colonies were the sugar producers, where the basis of the economy was slavery.

The American colonies produced tobacco, cotton, and rice in the south and naval material and animal skins in the north.

The empire of England in America was expanding day by day through wars and colonies. England managed to control New Amsterdam, which is today New York after the Anglo-Dutch wars. The American colonies spread westward in search of new lands for agriculture. During the Seven Years War, the English defeated the French and stayed with New France, in 1760, which substantially increased the British dominions in North America.
