He served as a general in the North Army in the Civil War. He served under General Ulysses S. Grant in 1862 and 1863, during the battles that led to the capture of Vicksburg on the Mississippi River and the defeat of the Southern armies in the state of Tennessee. In 1864, Grant followed as leader of the North's army in the south. He captured the strategically important city of Atlanta.
