Which factor contributed most to the beginning of World War 1?

    The biggest factor to the beginning of World War I was a system of interlocking treaties which obliged countries to come to each others defenses.

    When the Archduke was killed, this tripped all of the treaties and all of the Western world was brought into the war in some way.
