John C. Calhoun was a Southern American politician and the seventh vice president of the United States who is mostly remembered for his strong defense of slavery.

When Calhoun joined the Congress in 1810 he became one of the leading members of the War Hawk Faction. The War Hawks were young congressmen, usually from the South and the West who pressured President James Madison to go to war against Great Britain in 1812. Calhoun was a strong supporter of the war of 1812 because he believed Great Britain was committing violations against the United States' maritime rights and suspected Great Britain was financing the Native American's resistance.
