The concept of counterculture was introduced by Theodore Roszak in the book "The making of a counter culture", which was published in 1969.
When a group within a society opposes the prevailing cultural dominance in society, the term counterculture is usually used. It may be, for example, a subculture that, in addition to deviating from the prevailing social norm, is also characterized by opposition to it. An example of this is the late 1970s punks, who, in addition to being culturally defined in terms of clothing style and music, also criticized the foundations of society.
The concept of counterculture can also apply to a wider group in society. For example, feminism, which opposes the prevailing male hegemony, that is, patriarchy, can be called counterculture.
