If Congress (the legislative branch) passes a law that is unconstitutional, then the Supreme Court (Judicial Branch) maintains balance between the branches by checking them. Checking means sort of like correcting them. It's saying "hey, stop that." They can't pass laws that go against the constitution, and it's the Supreme Court's job to make sure they don't. #2 is separation of powers
