    The correct answer is: Maj. Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman of the Union Army. Sherman had captured the city of Atlanta back in the summer of 1864. In November of the same year, he decided to march toward the city of Savannah, located on the Georgia coast through the State of Georgia. Sherman applied a very ruthless but effective policy of scorched earth, destroying all the cities and towns he would find in his path in order to deny his adversaries places to rest, regroup or re-supply. This campaign is known as Sherman's March to the Sea.
