    The era of Reconstruction refers to the twelve year period after the Civil War. At this time, African Americans started to gain political and legal rights they never had before. This include citizenship rights and the right to vote (for African American men only). However, these rights were severely limited.

    Southern state governments implemented black codes, Jim Crow laws, poll taxes, and grandfather clauses in order to stop African American citizens from using their newly acquired rights. This was a giant stepback in terms of equality for African American citizens.
