In Argentina, Uruguay, and the southern part of Brazil, the term gauchos is used for the people that work on the ranches, and while riding on horse back are taking care of the cattle. They are the equivalent to the cowboys of the United States.

Since the cattle herding on the open vast grasslands of South America is still very popular and used, the number of gauchos is also big, and even growing. They are men that now hot to ride a horse very well, and are in charge for taking the cattle to graze, protecting it from predators, such as the jaguar, and return them safely where they are kept at night.
