Which statement describes the energy involved in diffusion?

Diffusion requires energy in all cases.

Diffusion requires energy in all cases.

    Explanation:

Simple diffusion refers to the process by which a flow of molecules is produced through a permeable membrane without an external contribution of molecular energy. This process, which is ultimately a difference in molecular concentration between the two media separated by the membrane, does not require an input of energy because its main driving force is the increase in the total entropy of the system

In this process the displacement of the molecules takes place following the concentration gradient, the molecules cross the membrane from the medium where they are in the highest concentration, towards the medium where they are in lower concentration.

The simple diffusion process is described by the Fick Laws, which relate the density of the flow of the molecules with the concentration difference between the two media separated by the membrane, the diffusion coefficient of the same and the permeability of the membrane.

The simple diffusion process is of vital importance for the transport of small molecules through cell membranes. It is the only mechanism by which oxygen enters the cells that use it as the final acceptor of electrons in the respiratory chain and one of the main mechanisms of osmotic regulation in cells.
