Westward expansion and further encroachment of Indian lands was made possible after the 1812 War because the old provisions of the 1783 Treaty of Paris, including territorial issues, became obsolete. A new treaty was negotiated, the Treaty of Ghent. The American negotiatiors were not willing to make concessions on the issue of the hard-won Northwest Territories. In the end, the article IX of the agreement says that lands, privileges and rights the Indians may have possessed in 1811 would be restored, but no map was drawn. So, it was an empty compromise.
