Why was it useful for the apollo astronauts to bring magnetometers and seismometers to the moon?

The Apollo astronauts brought magnetometers and seismometers to the moon in order to see whether the Moon had a magnetic field, and if so, to see how powerful it was, and to detect seismic activity on the Moon.
