Lincoln convinced senators to vote against the compromise.

The Crittenden Compromise was proposed following the election of 1860 (before Lincoln was inaugurated) which would have added amendments to the constitution appeasing the South.

The Crittenden Compromise, if passed, would have added an amendment to the Constitution allowing slavery to permanently exist in the US and would set the Missouri Compromise as the free-slave line. Southerners supported the compromise but Northerners rejected it. As a result of the compromise's failure, other states followed South Carolina and seceded from the Union.
