The American Indian Movement did not shy away from violent means, in addition to peaceful protests.

The American Indian Movement (AIM), founded in 1968, engaged in protests against US policy and treatment in regard to the Native American communities. But there also were incidents of use of violent means and armed resistance, such as attacking and burning the Custer Chamber of Commerce and courthouse in 1972, and battling a siege by the FBI, US Marshals and National Guard troops at Wounded Knee in 1973.
