Japanese-American citizens, after Pearl Harbor and a few months before the internment were forced to sell their real estate and assets at low cost. The government, in addition, froze their bank accounts, stripping them of all economic power. More than 110,000 individuals were transferred and distributed in 10 concentration camps (Manzanar was the best known, with extreme temperatures making survival extremely difficult), where they lived for four years. The first prisoners were forced to build the field, and then began to arrive about 1000 people per year. Many people slept on army steel cots. Some professional interns could work in the fields, but their salaries were extremely low and they were always under armed surveillance.
