    In order to finance the project to provide the German people with a low-cost car, the German government devised a system in which savers desirous of owning a Volkswagen (car of the people) contributed 5 marks a week. That is how about 286 million marks were collected. None of these people received their Kdf-Wagen, since the military projects monopolized the attention of the country after the beginning of the Second World War in September 1939. The factory of Fallersleben was destined to military production, and after 6 years of war, the Kdf-Wagen money was requisitioned by the Russians as war reparations.
