Before the American Revolution such British America colonies consisted of thirteen colonies; the New England colonies (Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island), the Middle Colonies (New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware) and the South Colonies (Virginia, Maryland, Georgia and South and North Carolina).

Each of these colonies had contrasting governments which resulting in different political, social, economic, and spiritual development. For instance, in the Province of Carolina, one of the southern colonies, had an economy based on large plantations while the economy of the New England and Middle colonies consisted mostly of merchants.
