Joseph Cinque. Sengbe Pieh, the son of a local chief, was born in Mendi, Sierra Leone, in about 1815. He became a rice farmer and he was married with three children when he was captured by Spanish slave-traders in 1839. The Spanish gave him the name Joseph Cinque and took him to Cuba where he was sold to Jose Ruiz.
