The Soviet Union had been invaded twice in the past. The first time, Napoleon and the French army invaded them in 1812. In 1941, the Soviet Union was invaded by Germany. Once World War II was over, the Soviet government knew that the West did not trust them, and worried that they might become the target of another invasion.
