In The Lessons For Women, one of the most crucial things that Ban Zhou emphasized was playing out one's societal role, which happens to be one of the most crucial aspects of Confucianism. According to Ban Zhou, a woman is to follow her role in society which is to be meek and obedient while taking care of the house and the children.

The Lessons for Women mirror Confucian attitudes because there are all about meekness, obedience, and playing ones part in the public. Ban Zhou would define an ideal woman as one who has feminine virtue, words, bearing, and work. An ideal husband on the other hand is one who controls his wife. He is resilient and rigid. An ideal matrimonial is when a husband controls his wife and the wife assists her husband.
