What is the main purpose of state legislatures

    State legislatures are the legislative authorities of the states and so their job is to legislate; i. e. make and/or enact laws. They write and introduce bills to become laws, and they also balance the power of the state governor as well as, more rarely, ratifying any amendments to the constitution.
