Why did the Pilgrims think they would be successful in Massachusetts?

    They found an abandoned native village which allowed them a start at food and shelter.

    Much of the success came from finding the village of Patuxet which had been abandoned after the tribe had been hit by disease. The Pilgrims also came as a religious group of families motivated by freedom to practice their own religion.
