Hitler started the Holocaust because he believed in a superior race of blond-haired, blue-eyed people. Jews were dark-skinned and dark-eyed for the most part whom he didn't consider fit his profile. He believed the intelligence of the these people to far inferior and wanted them erased from the world. There had been a lot of anti-Antisemitism for thousands of years in Europe. When Hitler and his propaganda declared the Jews to be the reason for all their problems after WW I, many people were ready to jump on the bandwagon even if it meant extermination.
