Columbus was an Italian explorer, born in 1451, in the Republic of Genoa (Italy). He originally was determined to show that he could get to India by sailing west across the Atlantic (as opposed to the usual route going round Africa and then sailing East).
He discovered the "New World" of the Americas on an expedition sponsored by King Ferdinand of Spain in 1492.
