Why did the Roosevelt administration extend diplomatic recognition to the Soviet Union? What was the effect of this action?

    Main reason was to overcome depression at any cost and expand trade and export to new areas and new markets specially large ones like Soviet Union. Effects of this actions were mere, and in strained much more after Ribbentrop-Molotov pact in 1939, situation changed after the German invasion of Soviet Union and Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941
