    According to Adam Smith mercantilism-protectionism led to smaller trade and exchange of goods and services between regions and countries, that led to smaller production, also force explotation of colonial natural resources to manufacture them in Europe and sell back to colonies under strict price, mercantilism also created government granted monopolies which effect was decreese of competition. (Mercantilism emerged in alte 16th c. from 11th to 15th c. Europe was are of free trade and it spread via silk roade and otehr routs to far east)
