During the election of 1848 the major parties were forced to take stand on slavery because of the rise of Free Soil Party. This was a short lived party that was active during the presidential elections of 1848 and 1852. It was a party with a single issue and was founded in Buffalo, New York. This party was mainly formed by the anti slavery unit members of the Democratic Party and the Whig party. Its sole purpose was opposing slavery in the Western territories.
