What was 3/5 compromise?

When every 3 out of 5 slaves count as a person to vote

This was a compromise during the Constitutional Convention which determined that slaves would count as 3/5's of a person each. This mattered because the population of a state is what determined how many representatives that state would receive in the House of Representatives. Many Southern states likely would not have agreed to the Constitution without this compromise.
