    Indians gathered in Amritsar in 1919 in order to protest British laws and policies.

    As you already know, India belong to Britain for a long time, and they wanted to be free. This is why they went to Amritsar to have a peaceful protest against the British, who then committed a massacre, having killed around 300 Indians, and wounded many more.
