How did Asoka bring peace and prosperity to India?

At first, Asoka was a cruel person. He fought in many wars and won the battle. However, somehow, he thought that all those fighting are no use. So, he started to adopted the peaceful doctrines of Buddhism instead of conquering the Indian penninsula and sent missionaries all over the land.
