Why did the Meiji Government have to get rid of the Samurai class in order to modernise/industrialise?

    The samurai were traditionalists. The nation was run by Shoguns. Shogun governments were set up in a feudalistic system. The restoration started with an American visit to Japan in 1853, showing off modern American steamships.
