    Global interactions and entanglements between the West and Asia are at present more and more at the forefront of scholarly attention and the Heidelberg Cluster of Excellence, aptly named 'Asia and Europe in a Global Context', is an initiative to facilitate academic endeavors in this promising area of research. Under the auspices of this Cluster a conference was organized in which the participants looked at the phenomenon of the state, and related processes of state building, in early modern Asia and Europe. (
