    Under the Articles of Confederation, states did not have to follow the laws/orders implemented by the federal government. This clause caused significant problems in the United States, as each individual state could essentially do whatever they wanted. There was no real unity among states because of this condition. This is why the US Constitution gave more power to the federal government in order to enforce laws.
