    The term manifest destiny was made popular in 1845 by a newspaper editor called John O' Sullivan. It refers to the idea that it was America's God given right and duty to expand its borders across the North American continent and in the process, bring Christianity and democracy to more people.

    Urging the U. S. to government to go to war with Mexico to settle a border dispute, O' Sullivan wrote that it was "our manifest destiny to overspread the continent allotted by Providence for the free development of our yearly multiplying millions"
