I think the best answer would be "a desire to erase traces of British colonial influence"

Indian returned to purely Indian named places started in 1947 and is still continually happening right now. Locals still call the names of some places as to the original name such as Mumbai; locals call it Bombay also with the presence of Bombay High Court.
