The panic of 1837 sparked a major financial crisis and recession in the United States that lasted until the mid 1940s. It is believed that there were both foreign and domestic causes of the crisis including speculative lending practices, declines in cotton prices, the lending policies of Great Britain, and also the end of a land bubble.
