The Prohibition was a country-wide ban on the sale of alcohol in the United States. This was the 18th amendment to the Constitution. It was repealed because people began buying alcohol from illegal vendors called speakeasies. The 21st amendment repealed the Prohibition. An interesting little fact is that alcoholism and deaths caused by alcohol poisoning increased after the Prohibition began. This is because the alcohol being produced wasn't regulated by the federal or state governments.
