Why did the french build string forts in ohio valley

The French and English both laid claim to the Ohio Valley region. Though the English colonists (mostly Pennsylvania and Virginia) claimed it, the French were the first to really move in and settle and make trade with the Indians. This alarmed the British. The race to fortify the Ohio Valley was on for both the French and English.

So that enemy's couldn't knock it down easily
