The answer to this question is Panama. Ferdinand de Lesseps was eager to build the canal because he was inspired by the work that the Egyptians did in ancient times. He tried to build the canal in Panama (which was then called the "Panama Canal"), but failed because things started to go into chaos when the canal was about to collapsed. It took another 25 years until the Canal was finally completed.
