    Convinced that Lincoln would destroy their "peculiar institution", South Carolina legislators voted to secede from the union.

    In his March 1861 Inaugural Address, Abraham Lincoln addressed the matters at hand with the south and their secession. He considered saving the union as more important than abolishing slavery.
