Why did early Americans write the Constitution and Bill of Rights? They wanted to convince Great Britain to let them have independence without further fighting. They needed to set up a new government and wanted to be sure it could not abuse their rights. They planned to use it to place limits on the actions of the British king and the soldiers present. They established a new government and restricted citizen rights to calm and stop the warfare.
