Why did the soviet union strongly support the national independence movements in the new third world?

The Soviet Union strongly supported national independence movements in the new Third World because it was officially part of their anti-imperialist campaign against North America and Europe. They also hoped to convince these new nations to ally themselves with the eastern bloc against European and American imperialists.
