Why were Sherman troops so excited about entering South Carolina during the civil war

    By crossing Georgia virtually unopposed, they had demonstrated that the confederacy was dying on its feet. So South Carolina was the state that had started the whole war, and Sherman was keen to start punitive raids on South Carolina.
